here’s a lovely selection of vintage canned meat advertisements.
I like this one. the idea of whole, “all-meat weiners” in a can with a complimentary “sack o’ barbecue sauce” just tickles me.

I feel obligated to share the recipe (or at least some of the recipe) for these delicious burnt butter and brown sugar cupcakes that I made this afternoon. I found them to be airy, just the right balance of sweet, and all in all very kicky and fresh little cakes.
beware: contains much butter!
burnt butter and brown sugar cupcakes!
from Nigella Lawson’s How to be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking
ingredients
for cupcakes:
1/2 cup plus 2 tbs. unsalted butter

mine did not have faces
3/4 cup self-rising cake flour
3 tbs. sugar
5 tbs. brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp.vanilla extract
1 tsp. baking powder
2-3 tbs. milk
icing:
1/2 cup plus 2 tbs. unsalted butter
1 2/3 to 2 cups confectioner’s sgar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2-3 tbs. milk
so I think I probably can’t give you the full directions here because I’d be violating copyright law or something. I think you can figure out how the recipe goes. but I will tell you that the oven needs to be 400 degrees and for both the cakes and the icing you must melt the butter over medium heat until slightly burnt, strain it to get rid of the yucky residue, then let it harden up a little bit before mixing with the other ingredients. hooray!
